The basics

Keep your emails brief.

Respond to emails promptly - within the same time you would return a phone call.

Always write an appropriate heading in the subject line to announce the content of your message. Do NOT send emails with a blank subject line.

Always check for punctuation, spelling and grammatical errors. (A note for Turkish speakers: If you are not sure whether you need a comma or not, choose NOT to use it. Commas are much rarer in English than they are in Turkish. Also remember NEVER to put a comma before "because").

Use capital letters ONLY when appropriate, which is very rare anyway! Otherwise, people will think you are SHOUTING and rude.

Format your email for plain text rather than HTML. Otherwise, some people will have to make an extra click to get to your message.

Avoid negative words that begin with "un, non, dis" or that end with "less" (undecided, dishonest, hopeless). Take a more positive, less complaining stance. ? Use smiles , winks ;), and other symbols ONLY when you are writing to people you are familiar with.

NEVER forward another person's private email to you without taking their consent first.

Do NOT send spam mail (jokes included!) to other people unless you know for a fact that they welcome these kinds of messages.
