Who is this course for?

Non-native teachers of English or teachers of other subjects, who want to update their English language, develop their confidence in using the language, and expand their vocabulary and range of expression.

You should have at least a lower intermediate (not elementary or beginner) level of English.

Course Summary

Teachers who work in non-English speaking countries often find they 'lose touch' with what is appropriate in English or with new developments in the language.

We have designed this course to revitalise your knowledge and use of English and to reinforce your confidence in using the language. The course is of a highly practical and participatory nature. You will be engaged in and challenged by a variety of fruitful activities. Although very much a language improvement course, many of the approaches you experiaence on this course will benefit your own teaching.

What are the key course contents?

Topics include:

revisiting and building up lexical & grammatical areas, especially those which cause difficulties

work on English phonology including sounds, stress, rhythm and intonation

a look at sociocultural aspects of English and how changes in culture influence changes in the language

studying English through authentic materials, e.g. newspaper articles, TV programmes, etc.

building confidence in listening to spoken English, including a wide variety of accents

building fluency and confidence in spoken English

learning aspects of English that are traditionally "untaught"

work on grammar and vocabulary

projects in the English-speaking environment (if the group wishes to do so).

Is this the right course for me?

Yes, if you want to expand your levels of knowledge and confidence.

If this is not the right course for you, please consider one of the following:

English for Adults (General English) - if you want to learn English with students from different professions;

Teaching Advanced Students - if you are already at an advanced level and you wish to improve your English and also wish to learn a variety of creative techniques for teaching advanced students

CLIL - Teaching Other Subjects in English - if you want a course which combines methodology with language improvement

PLEASE NOTE this course is not suitable for teachers with an elementary level. We invite these teachers to follow one of our English for Adults courses.
